Background of the Chestnut Industry

Currently, the grower base is estimated at 340, but the strategic plan anticipates that this may decline to around 300 within 5 years, with the larger businesses evolving and being responsible for more than 40% of production by that time.

At the present time 70 to 80 % of Australian production is located in the North East of Victoria - Bright, Myrtleford, Buckland Valley, Harrietville, Beechworth, Stanley. In the South of the Divide Region of Victoria, chestnuts are grown in the High Country of the Gippsland and the Macedon Ranges. Producers are also located in NSW (around Orange, Canberra, and the Northern Tablelands), Southern Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.
